| Moonee Valley City Council announced today it will start construction of a shared pedestrian and cyclist underpass on either side of Buckley Street on 21 October.
The 4 metre wide underpass will allow cyclists and pedestrians to access the two existing shared paths without having to cross at the busy Buckley Street and Lily Street intersection.
Moonee Valley City Council Mayor, Cr Paul Guiliano, said the underpass has been designed to ensure a safe and high quality environment is provided for all users.
“Currently, the two closest signalised crossing points are located at the intersections of Medway Road and Hoffmans Road, which are more than 600 metres and 450 metres away from the proposed underpass,” Cr Guiliano said.
“Once completed, it will provide safer connections for pedestrians and cyclists between the Maribyrnong River Trail and the Steele Creek Trail. It will also improve access and connection to St Bernard’s College and Rosehill Secondary College.”
He said it is hoped that new link will increase and promote the physical and social well being of children and the local community through the development of School Travel Plans.
This project is funded through the Department of Transport’s Local Area Access Program with joint funding from VicRoads and the City of Moonee Valley.
The works will be undertaken in the following two stages and will involve half road closures of Buckley Street at various times to allow for the construction of the underpass:
• Stage 1 will commence on 21 October and will be completed by 18 December 2009. • Stage 2 will commence on 10 January 2010 and will be completed by 5 March 2010. No works will be undertaken over the Christmas / New Year period which will extend from 19 December 2009 to 9 January 2010.
“While Council recognises the project may cause minor inconvenience to traffic users, this significant initiative will increase the number of pedestrians and cyclists in the area supporting Council’s commitment to green travel within the municipality,” Cr Guiliano said.
Temporary traffic changes will be in place for the entire duration of works and will enable two-way traffic (one-lane in each direction) to be maintained along Buckley Street.
