Transfer Station proposed fees - media coverage 16 May 2012

You may have heard Moonee Valley mentioned on Jon Faine's radio program this morning on 774 ABC Melbourne. During the program it was alleged that we are increasing charges at our Transfer Station by 100 per cent - this is not the case.

Waste disposal fees are proposed to increase on average by 6 per cent

All waste disposal fees, other than those relating to a minority of fees including high side trailers, are proposed to increase on average by 6 per cent - consistent with our overall proposed rate increase.

The 6 per cent proposed rate increase includes an allowance over and above Consumer Price Index for increased land fill levies, other State Government imposed costs and an amount based on the effect of carbon pricing, consistent with Federal Government estimates.

Proposed increase for high side trailer loads

We have proposed to increase fees for high side trailer loads to the Transfer Station more than other fees because in previous years we have underestimated the volume of waste we are taking per this type of trailer. We charge by the trailer load and do not weigh each individual load that comes in. However, we are charged by weight when disposing of this material.

The increase is primarily to correct this miscalculation. A small proportion of the increase relates to the increased land fill levy, as well as the effect of carbon pricing – which has increased in line with Federal Government estimates.

In the communications handed out to residents at the Transfer Station the increase in high side trailers fees could have been more clearly communicated. Council apologies for any confusion created.

The Transfer Station fact sheet has been updated to better explain the fee increase for high side trailer loads.
