Community Safety Register

Connecting and supporting people in our community

We have established a relationship with Victoria Police to enhance service delivery and improve the safety of vulnerable residents, who due to their personal circumstances and health status may be at risk.

Through this partnership we have developed a Community Safety Register, designed to connect and support those residents at risk.

The register increases communication and regular contact with vulnerable community members in an effort to monitor their wellbeing and to ensure they are adequately supported during crisis or emergency situations.

The development of the register was made possible through a generous grant from the State Government Department of Community Development, Office of Senior Victorians.

How it works

The Community Safety Register is essentially a database containing primary information and contact details of Moonee Valley residents who are considered vulnerable, including frail aged, people with a disability, or those who are isolated. The register also holds next of kin contact details for all persons registered.

The register provides a service whereby residents who are living alone, who are socially isolated, at risk or who have a disability, can nominate to receive regular contact calls from volunteers to check that they are safe and well.

A regular telephone call to older or isolated individuals is used to ascertain their wellbeing and, if a call is not answered, the next of kin can be notified. Alternatively, a visit to the home can be made by the appropriate authorities.

Location and hours of operation

The register operates during standard business hours, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm from the first floor of the Milleara Integrated Learning and Development Centre for Children, which is located at 1-5 Keilor Park Drive, East Keilor.

How to register to be on the database

To be listed on the database a resident can be referred by a health professional, care giver, Police officer or family member. Individuals can also personally request to be included on the register.

The registration process is easy and involves filling in and submitting the application form.

These forms are also available at our Civic Centre, 9 Kellaway Avenue, Moonee Ponds, Council libraries, local Neighbourhood Centres and the Flemington Community Centre as well as at Police Stations in Moonee Valley.

Information for Volunteers

We are always looking for volunteers to help run and manage the Moonee Valley Community Safety Register.

Volunteers are based at the Milleara Integrated Learning and Development Centre for Children in East Keilor.

The role of the volunteer includes:

  • making regular phone calls to residents (at an agreed time) to make sure they are safe and well
  • assessing and processing application forms for those being nominated to be on the register
  • reporting any issues or incidents involving people on the register
  • helping those on the register if they visit the centre.

To be a volunteer for the register people need to have a genuine interest in helping others, good communication skills and the ability to assess a situation and take appropriate action.

The register is managed by us and the Victoria Police.

All volunteers receive:

  • a comprehensive induction and training from our officers
  • an information pack and instruction sheets
  • ongoing support and assistance from us.

All potential volunteers are screened by Victoria Police and us and are required to undergo a Police and working with children check.

The Moonee Valley Community Safety Register is such an important project and its success depends on people getting involved. Why not volunteer for this project and make a difference to someone’s life!
