A dedicated junior baseball field is on the way to Strathmore Heights, in memory of a local legend taken too soon.
Moonee Valley Councillor Narelle Sharpe paid a visit to Boeing Reserve in Strathmore Heights recently to announce $364,000 in funding for the construction of the Chris Lane Memorial Baseball Field as part of Council’s 2021-22 Annual Budget.
The field is named in memory of young Essendon Baseball Club player and Moonee Valley resident, Chris Lane, who was tragically killed in 2013 when in USA on a baseball scholarship, aged just 22.
Australia’s first purpose-built Little League field, the new ground will accompany the Essendon Baseball Club’s existing facilities at Boeing Reserve, as part of Council’s Boeing Reserve Master Plan.
Councillor Sharpe announced the project when she was Mayor almost 10 years ago and reflected that she is thrilled to see the dream of a junior field realised for Mr Lane’s family and the thriving local baseball community.
The field is close to the hearts of many and will be a fitting tribute to Chris’ memory.
