Cr Samantha Byrne elected as Mayor

Rose Hill Ward Councillor Samantha Byrne was last night elected as the Mayor of Moonee Valley.

It is the second time Cr Byrne has been elected to the role. The second term councillor served as Mayor in 2019/20 and Deputy Mayor in 2017/18.

Cr Byrne will be leading the municipality for the next 12 months, taking over from outgoing Mayor Cr Cam Nation.

Cr Byrne said she was proud and excited to be elected to represent Moonee Valley as Mayor.

“What an honour it is to be elected as mayor for a city I love so much for the second time,” Mayor Byrne said.

“I was Mayor for Moonee Valley in 2020 when the world was basically shut down and now to be the Mayor responsible for safely yet boldly reopening our city excites me and I am committed to the massive task ahead.

“We have so much to offer in our neighbourhoods and I can’t wait to lead an enthusiastic and committed team to help bring our city back to life.”

Myrnong ward Councillor Jacob Bettio was elected as Deputy Mayor.

“I am beyond excited to work alongside Cr Byrne to achieve some great outcomes for the Moonee Valley community,” Deputy Mayor Bettio said.

“Moonee Valley is my home. Moonee Valley is where I feel safe, secure and connected. Our city continues to lead the way in supporting the LGBTIQA+ community but there is so much more that we can accomplish together.

“I want to pledge my complete support to our small business community. As a small business owner, myself, I know how tough the past two years have been, but as Deputy Mayor I will do everything I can to ensure that the path to recovery is as clear as can be.”

Both Cr Byrne and Cr Bettio were elected unopposed by fellow councillors.
