Mayor sells The Big Issue

Our Mayor Samantha Byrne has swapped roles with two of our friendly local vendors to sell The Big Issue on Puckle Street.

The Big Issue vendor David donned the robes to become Mayor, while Cr Byrne was one of many Mayors across Australia to celebrate the 600th edition of The Big Issue as part of its Mayor Selling event.

David has been selling the magazine since 2015 and in 2018 his partner Kylie also started selling. David and Kylie have enjoyed building up their loyal customer base around Puckle Street.

The pair experienced homelessness for more than two years before receiving permanent housing in Ascot Vale in February this year.

Cr Byrne stepped away from her Mayoral duties for 30 minutes to help sell The Big Issue while also raising awareness of people who are doing it tough.

A few people were a bit surprised to see the Mayor in the vendor vest while David greeted people along Puckle Street in the Mayoral robes.

The Big Issue, best known for the iconic magazine, provides no-barrier work opportunities to people who are doing it tough for all kinds of reasons.

The concept is simple: street vendors buy the magazine for $4.50 and sell it on streets around Australia for $9, earning a meaningful income.

If you see Kylie or David selling The Big Issue in Moonee Ponds – or Kylie’s aunty Edna who recently started selling – make sure you stop and say hello!
