An update on Riverside Park

A pirate ship play structure at Riverside Park

The timber Pirate Ship Playground at Riverside Park has been closed following the discovery of extensive timber decay during routine inspections.

Further assessments confirmed significant deterioration of key structural elements, meaning the playground can no longer be used safely. As a result, the Pirate Ship will be demolished and removed from the site in the coming months.

We understand this will be disappointing for many families who have enjoyed the Pirate Ship since 2014. However, community safety is our priority.

While Council is not proposing an immediate replacement of the Pirate Ship with a similar structure, community members will have an opportunity to help shape the future of the site through the development of the Moonee Valley Play and Social Recreation Plan in 2026/27.

As part of the consultation process, residents will be invited to share their ideas and feedback on future play and recreation opportunities at Riverside Park. Further information about how to get involved will be available when consultation opens in 2027.

FAQs

What caused the timber to decay?

Decay of the timber structure has been caused by a range of factors, primarily due to environmental conditions.  The primary cause of timber decay as found in the Pirate Ship is excess moisture.  This can be caused by sub-surface conditions, issues with drainage and inundation during weather events.

When will the Pirate Ship be demolished?

The Pirate Ship will be demolished over summer 2026-27, subject to the availability of contractors.

What will be located in the area once the Pirate Ship is removed?

The area will be remediated with playground mulch as an interim measure until the future use of the area is determined.  The surrounds will be maintained to ensure the area is safe for the community to use in the meantime.

What about the rest of the play equipment and park infrastructure in the area?

The remaining play equipment and park infrastructure will be retained.

Why isn’t Council replacing the Pirate Ship?

The demolition of the Pirate Ship provides an opportunity to check in with the community on what is important to them in play spaces in this area. The timeframe for demolition is closely aligned with the upcoming consultation process for the Play and Social Recreation Plan that will look at how we deliver play more broadly across the Council area. Pausing to gather this information will ensure that we’re delivering projects aligned with the most current information and community needs.

How can I provide input into future planning for the playground?

Council is developing the Play and Social Recreation Plan during 2026/27 to determine priorities for playgrounds and other social recreation infrastructure across Moonee Valley.

The development of this Plan will provide the opportunity for community input into proposed improvements to parks and reserves, including Riverside Park.
