Moonee Valley local Awatif Taha inducted into Victorian Honour Roll of Women
Moonee Valley’s very own Awatif Taha has been inducted into Victorian Honour Roll of Women in recognition of her services to the community.
Taha is a Sudanese Australian community leader who has dedicated her life to supporting and empowering culturally diverse communities in the Moonee Valley area.
She played a pivotal role in Flemington Works – a community program dedicated to creating employment and entrepreneurial opportunities with residents of the Flemington Housing Estate, while strengthening social and economic inclusion.
Through her active participation in Flemington Works, Taha could always be relied on to share ideas and feedback.
During the pandemic, Taha was part of a group of 14 women who called themselves Mamma’s Kitchen. Thanks to funding from the state government’s Working for Victoria initiative, the Mamas completed a 12-month stint of serving up East African inspired curries, samosas and more at the Clocktower Centre Café. Taha’s leadership was key in bringing this program to life.
For many of the women who formed Mamma’s Kitchen, the program was their first time participating in paid work and gave them purpose, confidence and the opportunity to practice their culinary skills.
Taha also helped administer the Strong Together: Empowering CALD Girls and Mothers camp – a three-day camp that brought together girls and mothers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in Flemington and Ascot Vale.
Congratulations to Taha on being inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women – an achievement that is so well deserved. We are proud to have her as part of the Moonee Valley community.
