Bowls is more than just a game – it’s a place to belong

Buckley Park Bowls Club

More than 150,000 Victorians regularly play bowls, with another 433,000 taking part in social and barefoot bowls each year. That adds up to plenty of bowls, banter and connection.

Once seen as a game for retirees, bowls now attracts more players of all ages to compete.

Low-impact exercise may draw people to the sport, but it’s a strong sense of community keeps them coming back.

Local clubs, such as Essendon Bowls Club and Buckley Park Bowls Club in Moonee Valley, serve as community hubs where members gather, compete and build lifelong friendships.

Council is advocating for a revitalised Essendon Community Bowls Precinct as part of our Advocacy Strategy 2026-29.

Redeveloping the existing Buckley Park Bowls Club would create a modern community hub with improved facilities, replacing a venue last rebuilt more than 50 years ago, in 1975.

As Moonee Valley continues to grow, we need community spaces that bring people together, support active lifestyles and create a strong sense of belonging.

The Federal Government has already committed $1.2 million towards transforming the Buckley Park Bowls Club site into a modern community sporting facility.

Council will continue working closely with local bowling clubs to progress the project and deliver outcomes that benefit the broader community.

A revitalised precinct will help ensure residents of all ages and abilities can enjoy the benefits of bowls for generations to come.
