Concerns on private property
If asbestos is found, disturbed, or being handled unsafely on private property (e.g. homes, renovations, construction sites), contact WorkSafe Victoria.
WorkSafe Victoria should be notified where there is:
- unsafe removal or renovation involving asbestos materials
- exposure risks to workers, neighbours, or the public
- unlicensed asbestos removal activity
- failure to follow required safety controls or containment procedures
- WorkSafe may investigate and ensure compliance with workplace and safety regulations.
Asbestos dumped on Council land or public areas
If asbestos-containing material has been illegally dumped on public land (parks, roadsides, reserves, footpaths), report it to your local council (request waste or illegal dumping response).
Councils typically manage:
- removal and containment of dumped hazardous waste
- public safety barriers around contaminated areas
- coordination with licensed asbestos contractors
- in many cases, councils may also coordinate with environmental regulators if the contamination is significant.
Additional reporting option (environmental contamination)
If dumping is widespread or impacting soil, waterways, or the environment, you can also contact Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA).
- 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842)
- Email contact@epa.vic.gov.au
What to include in a report (if possible)
- Exact location (address or nearest landmark)
- Photos (from a safe distance—do not disturb material)
- Description of material (e.g. sheets, insulation, broken fragments)
- Time and date observed
- Any known activity (renovation, dumping, contractors present)
