Where is our public art?

You might have noticed something different at our parks lately… three public artworks have begun disappearing.

Glenn Romanis’ Industry has stood on site at Travancore Park since 2003. Along with Human Occupation and River Red Gum, these three works make up the Totems Project. The sculptures were commissioned as a series and underwent repairs in 2019-2020.

Like all things do, these artworks have now reached the end of their lifespan and River Red Gum at Boeing Reserve has suffered irreparable damage. Moonee Valley City Council has worked with the artist to decommission and remove all three sculptures.

But don’t despair! The large bluestones that make up the base of these works will be re-used and become part of a new landscaping project happening throughout Travancore Park. The parks team will be starting work in coming months so keep an eye out.
