Council has completed the detailed design for the Walter Street Reserve Pavilion Upgrade, following community consultation undertaken between 18 November and 15 December 2024.
The project will deliver a renovated sporting pavilion and a new additional building to support the growing needs of local sporting clubs and the wider community. The upgrade has been designed to improve accessibility, inclusivity, sustainability and functionality while respecting the existing character of the reserve.
What's included in the design
Detailed design is now complete and includes:
Repurposing the current pavilion building as player and umpire changerooms and amenities.
Construction of a new freestanding building incorporating social space, kitchen facilities, storage and amenities.
A new building design elevated in accordance with Melbourne Water flood mapping requirements.
Relocation of the playground further south-east along Walter Street, between the new pavilion building and the cricket nets.
New landscaping and planting throughout the reserve.
An inclusive, accessible and female-friendly design.
Environmentally sustainable design principles in line with the South East Councils Climate Change Alliance (SECCCA) Briefezy Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) tool.
Retention of significant trees within the reserve.
Removal of the community garden from the final design, reflecting community feedback.
The upgrade will also provide:
More changerooms and toilets to support increasing numbers of junior and female players.
Modern, female-friendly toilets and separate changerooms.
Internal toilets for spectators and function attendees.
A new public toilet available to reserve users during daylight hours.
A more functional internal layout.
Increased kitchen circulation and storage space.
Additional storage for sporting clubs.
Multipurpose spaces available for broader community use outside allocated sporting club hours.
Next steps
Council has endorsed construction funding for the project through its Capital Works Program, with delivery planned across the 2026/27 and 2027/28 financial years.
The project is expected to be completed by June 2028.
