"If you have small kids, this place is a must!! Huge road bike track to help teach little ones road sense and cycling skills. You can even book it out for kids parties!!"

Lucas S

Went there today as part of our Grade 2 excursion. The children had a fantastic time and learned so much in an engaging and authentic way. Laurie, our instructor, was simply fabulous. She had a wonderful way with the kids and clearly knew what she was doing. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Would definitely come back again!

Pearl Best

My son is absolutely obsessed with traffic lights so this was the perfect place for him. When hearing they only let the first 30 kids in per session, i got there 35mins early not wanting him to miss out (We were the first ones there) so probably not necessary to get there that early but I would recommend about 20 mins before it opened would be perfect as thats when most people got there.
Was a 45 min drive to get there but will definitely go back

Jess Randle

Good fun for the kids, got there early so no hassle getting in.

Education sessions

Most children need lots of help from adults to manage the risks that come with living in a city with busy roads.

Education sessions at Essendon Traffic School help children to build basic road safety skills as riders and as pedestrians. These sessions are best suited for Kindergarten and Primary aged children, and can link to curriculum units on safety, health, community and transport.

Maximum numbers per session:

30 participants for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students

20 participants for Grade 4, 5 and 6 students

How's the session run?

The sessions start with a short road safety lesson, before we head off on a walking tour around the traffic school. On the walk we'll talk about what all the different lights and signs mean. Now it's time to get active. Using what we have learnt, we will spend the end of the session riding our bikes and if there's time we'll use it to explore the on-site tram.

Monday - Friday (during school term) 10am - 11:30am or 12:30pm to 2:00pm

Frequently asked questions

What to bring?

If children have their own helmets they are encouraged to bring them; however we have helmets available for those without one. Students with long hair should have this tied in a style close to their head (eg low ponytail or plait) to allow helmets to be fitted correctly.

Children should wear closed toe shoes suitable for riding and minimise loose clothing that can pose as a hazard.

All children need to wear a visible name tag to assist the Traffic School Educator.

Drinks are recommended, although there is a drinking fountain on site.

Where does the class enter?

All classes should enter the traffic school as a group, accompanied by the teachers, no more than five minutes prior to the booked session time. A good meeting place, drop off and collection point for groups (and buses) is Montgomery Park, located near the corner of Lawson and Hilda Street. There are also picnic facilities at this park if your group wishes to have a snack or play time before or after your session.

Groups will only be admitted into the Traffic School during their designated booking time, so if you will be arriving earlier or getting picked up later you may like to plan some time at the park.
Please note there is no Bus parking directly outside the Traffic School. Please ensure that buses do not double park behind parked cars along Lawson Street

What happens if the weather is too hot or too wet?

Hot weather

According to Council's "Heat and Sun Protection Policy", Moonee Valley outdoor staff are not permitted to work in temperatures above 36 degrees. Therefore should the Bureau of Meteorology predict forecasts over 36 degrees two to three days prior to the scheduled booking a Council officer will contact the organisation to inform them of the possibility of cancelling or rescheduling their booking. One day prior to the booking the Bureau of Meteorology will be checked once again.

Should predicted temperature exceed 36 degrees, the organisation will be notified that their booking will either be cancelled (and fees refunded) or rescheduled, should there be availabilities.

Wet weather

This is an outdoor facility with limited shelter. In the event that wet weather or thunderstorms are predicted, bookings must be rescheduled (depending on availability) or cancelled (and fees refunded). In the event of light rain, students must wear adequate protective clothing. If poor weather is forecast a Council officer will make contact one day prior to determine whether the booking can go ahead or if it needs to be rescheduled.

Can we have a snack or play inside the Traffic School before or after our session?

Unfortunately your entry to the Traffic School is limited to your booked session times. There may be another group coming in after you, maintenance works or a staff changeover which means the grounds are not available. Montgomery Park is adjacent to the Traffic School and has picnic and playground facilities which many schools make use of before or after their education sessions.

Bike Ed program

Learn more about bicycle safety at the Essendon Traffic School through the Bike Ed program.

Bike Ed is suitable to children between the ages of 9 and 13 (years 4 to 7 at school) and can be delivered by schools at the Essendon Traffic School or in a community setting.

A Bike Ed Kit has also been developed especially for teachers to help deliver this training.

For more information on how we can assist your school with Bike Ed please contact Transport Project Officer on 9243 8888.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it rains?

If the weather is poor on the day of the party and you decide not to go ahead, you just need to let us know on the next business day that you cancelled your party and we will either refund or reschedule your booking. This is on the condition that you have not entered the facility during your booking time, otherwise the booking will be considered to have started and no refund will apply.

Can children bring scooters and skateboards?

Scooters and skateboards are not permitted at Traffic School as they are not permitted on Victorian roads. Combining bikes and scooters on the roadway can also become quite dangerous as they travel at different speeds and heights and in the case of a collision significant injuries can occur.

How early do I need to book?

The Traffic School is very popular for private bookings, especially over the Spring and Summer months. It is best to call as soon as you can once the bookings are opened on the first of each month to secure a weekend booking. If you do miss out on your preferred date you can go on a Waiting List and will be contacted if a cancellation occurs.

Can I have an inflatable jumping castle?

Jumping castles or inflatable amusements are no longer permitted due to safety regulations.

How many children can I have at my party?

The maximum number of children permitted is thirty, this does not include children under two years or those who will not be riding.

Can I provide alcohol for adults at the party?

Essendon Traffic School is an alcohol free zone, and as a designated Children’s Play area is also a Smoke free zone. Any evidence of smoking or alcohol use at the Traffic School is considered a breach of your hire conditions and may result in a fine.

What happens if I forget to pick up my key?

Keys for Private hirers need to be picked up before 3.30pm on the Friday before the booking. It is the hirer’s responsibility to collect their key as Moonee Valley City Council staff will not be available to open the facility during out of hour’s times. No refunds will be given to anyone who fails to collect their key, notwithstanding exceptional circumstances. If a Duty Officer is required to open or lock up for you a substantial call out fee will be charged, this may be in excess of $250.

Can I bring decorations for my party?

No streamers, balloons or other decorations are to be attached to any permanent structure within the Traffic School. You are welcome to bring table decorations, but nothing should be taped or tied to any part of the buildings, in particular the mural in the party area as this has been damaged in the past.
