Statement from the Deputy Mayor

Moonee Valley City Council is deeply saddened to hear of the attack on Independent Federal Member for Indi, Dr Helen Haines.

Dr Haines has dedicated her career to helping others.

Our thoughts are with Dr Haines, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery. We also extend our support to her family, friends, colleagues and the communities she represents during this difficult time. We acknowledge and thank community members and first responders who assisted Dr Haines following the attack.

Everyone has the right to feel safe at work and while serving their community. Elected representatives play a critical role in our democracy, and no one should be subjected to violence, intimidation or harm while carrying out that responsibility.
Violence has no place in our democracy, homes or communities.

Respectful debate and differing viewpoints are essential to strong democracies. Disagreement must never lead to violence or intimidation. Moonee Valley City Council condemns all forms of violence and intimidation. We stand with those calling for safe and respectful participation in our democratic processes.
