Mayor to step down early

Moonee Valley City Council Mayor Dr Rose Iser has advised that after much reflection, she will step aside from her role as Mayor a few weeks early. She remains committed to her elected role as Councillor.

The next Mayoral election is scheduled for 29 October. Any temporary arrangements until a new Mayor is elected will be considered shortly.

Two special individuals to be remembered

Two public memorials were approved to commemorate individuals who made an impact in Moonee Valley and help ensure that their legacy lives on.

A memorial plaque will be added to a park bench seat in Bradshaw Street Reserve, Essendon to remember and celebrate the life of the late Rosie Zuhairi who passed away in early 2026 from aplastic anaemia, aged 12. Rosie was an energetic, bright and inquisitive young person who lived and went to school locally.

The other memorial will be to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Walter Burley Griffin.

The Walter Burley Griffin Society has initiated the planting of 150 trees in total, across councils and community groups within Australia, the USA and Lucknow in India to commemorate this significant milestone.

Commemorative eucalyptus trees will be planted in the Moonee Valley area to help celebrate Walter Burley Griffin, who famously designed the Incinerator Gallery in 1929.

A new policy for property

Moonee Valley Council manages a range of assets that help us deliver a diverse range of services for the local community, including community centres, sport and leisure facilities, and public open spaces.

After a review of existing property policies, a new Property Policy has been adopted. The aim of this newly developed Property Policy is to make it clearer for the community to understand how Council makes decisions around the acquisitions and disposals of property, as well as the management of leases and other agreements.

Niddrie townhouse development will not go ahead

Councillors voted not to grant a permit for a 36-townhouse development at 67 Nolan Street, Niddrie.

Council has opted not to move forward with the planned development due to concerns related to car parking and traffic impacts, overdevelopment and overshadowing.

Seven story apartment building greenlit in Essendon

A seven story Essendon apartment building at 58 Richardson Street, Essendon has received the green light to go ahead. Notably, the proposed building has 15 dwellings and ample carparks for residents and visitors. In making the decision, councillors acknowledged eight objections to the development.

In brief

The council has approved the Moonee Valley City Council’s Annual Financial Report 2025/26. It will now be submitted to the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office for final audit approval.

Council opted to renew telecommunications leases across two sites, Walter Street Reserve and Cross Keys Reserve.

There will be further community consultation regarding the design and construction of a potential all-access playground at Victory Park in Ascot Vale.

A two-year extension of Open Space Management – Sports Field Maintenance contracts were granted, with Elite Turf Services, Australian Agribusiness, Marsh Developments, Greenway Turf Solutions, The Trustee for Green Turf Trust and Alfco Investments. The total contract value of $3.6 million will help ensure Moonee Valley sports fields remain safe and well-maintained.

A one-year contract extension was granted with Tompsett Asphalt, Prestige Paving and Fulton Hogan Industries for Asphalt Maintenance Services to maintain the local road network. The total contract value is $1.7 million.

The Capital Works Performance Report – Q4, 2025/26 was endorsed, as well as the People Report – Performance Report Q4, 2025/26, the Performance Statement 2025/26 and the Governance and Management Checklist 2025/26.
