Reducing community emissions

In 2021, Council set up the Community Climate Emissions Reduction Reserve to support local projects that help cut carbon emissions across Moonee Valley.

These projects are part of Let’s Go Zero—Council’s program focused on working with our community to reduce emissions and take climate action together.

We support projects across a range of areas including:

  • switching to clean, renewable energy
  • waste reduction
  • supporting behaviour change and sharing information
  • getting around more sustainably
  • supporting greener buildings and spaces in our city.

Real results, real impact

Here are some of the highlights delivered through this community-supported program.

Let’s Go Zero heroes
Bill and Anne: Switched from gas to induction cooktop
  • Lower energy costs
  • Faster, cleaner cooking

Bill and Anne replaced their old gas cooktop with a modern induction model through Council’s Home Electrification and Efficiency Program. After years of relying on gas, rising costs and health concerns prompted the switch. The process was simple - Council’s vetted experts arranged assessments, quotes, and installation, and a rebate made the decision even easier. Now, they’re enjoying a safer, more efficient cooktop that heats quickly, is easy to clean, and supports their move away from fossil fuels.

The Herbert Family: Solar-powered hot water upgrade
  • Cut gas reliance
  • $40/ month saved

The Herberts upgraded to an electric hot water system through Council’s Home Electrification and Efficiency Program. After years of relying on gas due to a failed solar hot water setup, they installed a RECLAIM stainless steel 600-litre unit that fits their narrow space and can be controlled via smartphone. The system uses solar power from their roof, helping them cut gas supply charges and save about $40 per month, moving them closer to their goal of a fully sustainable, all-electric home.

Maria: All electric home makeover
  • Cut gas reliance
  • $40/ month saved

Maria’s electrification journey began when her ageing gas appliances needed replacing. Already committed to sustainability, she had installed solar panels in 2020 and was keen to eliminate gas for environmental reasons. After learning about Council’s Home Electrification and Efficiency Program (HEEP), Maria said, “I knew I didn’t want another gas system, but I didn’t know what I wanted to put in. So having someone come around and take a look was really good.” She received a tailored plan covering heating, cooling, hot water, and cooking, and decided to go ahead with the full upgrade. Reflecting on the process, she shared, “All the tradies were great. Everyone who came to do work was really helpful’.

Powering apartments with solar
  • Shared renewable energy
  • 44% bill reduction

The 12-apartment building on Union Road, Ascot Vale got help from Council’s shared solar expert through the Solar for Apartment initiative, to install shared rooftop solar. The consultant assisted the body corporate to obtain $33,600 from the State Government's Solar for Apartments program to install rooftop solar. The impact is significant: each apartment is saving an estimated $267 annually on electricity bills, achieving a 44% reduction in costs, while collectively cutting 14.8 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year.
