New Container Deposit Scheme basket bins make recycling on the go easier

Container Deposit Scheme basket bin in Queens Park, Moonee Ponds.

Recycling your eligible drink containers while you’re out and about is now easier, thanks to our new Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) basket bin trial rolling out across Moonee Valley.

The baskets are attached to selected public litter bins, providing a dedicated spot for people to leave eligible drink containers instead of throwing them away.

Whether you’re looking to return containers for a refund or simply want to help reduce waste, the baskets offer a simple way to support recycling in the community. Residents can leave their empty eligible containers in the baskets or collect containers already there and take them to any refund point to receive a 10-cent refund for each item.

The trial forms part of a statewide initiative involving councils across Victoria, aimed at reducing litter, increasing recycling rates and keeping valuable materials out of landfill.

Basket bins have been installed at prominent locations across the municipality, including popular parks such as Queens Park and Woodlands Park, major reserves including Canning Street Reserve and Ascot Chase, sports precincts such as Keilor East Leisure Centre and Cross Keys Reserve, and selected community hubs including Djerring Hub.

Most drink containers between 150ml and 3 litres are eligible for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme. Look for the 10c mark on the label before placing containers in a basket or taking them to a refund point. Remember to keep lids attached and avoid crushing containers to help ensure they can be successfully refunded and recycled.
