Place naming and public memorial

Moonee Valley name bank nominations - remembering local legends

Do you know a local unsung hero who has made a lasting impact? We invite you to nominate them for consideration in future place naming projects in Moonee Valley.

Naming of community assets

Council is responsible for naming and renaming of roads, parks and other places in the municipality. This is an important role. Place names can:

  • help create a sense of belonging
  • preserve cultural heritage
  • recognise the contributions of individuals or groups.

Place names also serve a practical purpose. They:

  • provide clear addresses for residents and deliveries
  • help emergency services respond quickly
  • assist drivers and visitors to navigate the area.

All proposed names must follow the Victorian Government Naming Rules for Places , which are based on the Geographic Place Names Act 1998. Council also uses its own Place Naming Policy to guide decisions.

Moonee Valley name bank

To support place naming, Council keeps a Name Bank Register.

This is a list of names that may be used in the future for roads, parks or other places. Anyone can suggest a name, including:

  • individuals
  • community groups
  • organisations
  • government agencies.

To submit a name, complete the online nomination form.

Public memorials

Council understands that community members may wish to honour a person, group or event through a memorial in a public space. Public memorials can be placed in Council-owned or managed areas, such as parks.

The Public Memorial Policy sets out how memorials are approved and managed in municipality.
