Infrastructure, services, liveability: Moonee Valley lays out advocacy agenda for next four years
On the eve of Budget season, and six months out from the next state election, Moonee Valley City Council has unveiled its advocacy asks for the next four years, including a new sports infrastructure.
Moonee Valley City Council has endorsed the Advocacy Strategy 2026-29, which includes calls for state and federal governments to fund a soccer hub in Airport West, and a competition-grade indoor sports facility for Essendon Fields.
Moonee Valley is the only municipality in Greater Melbourne without such an indoor facility.
The strategy also contains calls to back Moonee Valley services and liveability initiatives, including a mental health ‘local’ that would make seeking support easier for residents and the delivery of long-awaited Airport Rail Link that would see a new train station at Airport West.
The advocacy agenda was informed by extensive community consultation carried out during the development of Council’s community vision, MV2040 long-term strategy and Council Plan 2025-29, as well as responses to the 2025 community satisfaction survey.
Mayor of Moonee Valley, Councillor Dr Rose Iser, said it was more important than ever that state and federal governments, as well as industry and the broader community, add their support to this significant suite of future-proofing projects.
“Everyone in Moonee Valley wants our beautiful city to be a healthy, vibrant and welcoming place to live, work, or visit,” Dr Iser said.
“Like most local governments, Moonee Valley is working to meet the demands of a growing and ageing population – and to address climate change.
“While we have been financially cautious and responsible, wider financial pressures mean we need support to deliver the services and facilities we need for our residents to thrive.”
The Advocacy Strategy 2026-29 builds upon wins achieved over the previous four years, with highlights including:
- a federal government commitment of $6 million to establish a local headspace
- more than $1 million to help our community recover from the 2022 Maribyrnong River flood and ongoing impacts of Covid-19
- progressing the Keilor East/Airport West railway station
- improvements to active and sustainable transport
- accelerating our zero-carbon transition
- upgrading community sporting and recreation facilities.
“These achievements show what’s possible when we work closely with our community, other levels of government and key partners,” Mayor Dr Iser said.
“We welcome and encourage the participation of our whole community in our advocacy work. There are many ways to do this, from getting involved in community consultations on our engagement platform, Your Say, to writing and meeting with local Members of Parliament.
“Together, we can keep advocating strongly for Moonee Valley, delivering the services and facilities we need for our residents to thrive.”
