Lest We Forget – remembering our ANZACs
Moonee Valley City Council is calling on the whole of the community to join a commemoration ceremony ahead of Anzac Day.
The ANZAC legend, which was born on 25 April 1915, remembers when some 16,000 soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed under fire on the shores of Gallipoli, Türkiye.
Mayor of Moonee Valley, Cr Dr Rose Iser acknowledged that, in the tragedy of all wars and especially during the Gallipoli campaign, the actions of those who served had a powerful impact on us all.
“This is an opportunity to remember, and for some learn, about the courage and sacrifices of men and women from all backgrounds – including First Nations peoples – in conflicts we wish were avoided,” Cr Iser said.
“Many of us know and understand this ceremonial tradition but if you have never attended an ANZAC commemoration and are curious, this is an ideal opportunity to find out more about how we remember and grieve the impact of wars on our community.
“This is an honoured tradition for our Council, which has held its ANZAC commemoration ceremonies at the Queens Park Cenotaph since 1929, when it was built.
“We will acknowledge the tragic sacrifices and contributions of ANZACs and our service men and women and their families.”
This ceremony is presented in conjunction with the Essendon RSL sub-branch and hymns will be performed by Moonee Valley Brass and singer Stacey Camilleri.
Refreshments will be served after the ceremony in the Civic Centre’s Council Chamber where artwork made by local school students will on display.
