Moonee Ponds Creek makeover continues

Site location of the second stage of Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek.

Moonee Ponds Creek will continue to undergo a major transformation, with the next stage of works set to create a more natural creek and community open space.

Melbourne Water has developed a concept design for Stage 2 of Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek. The design has been informed by community feedback and incorporates lessons learned from Stage 1, including integrating local and Traditional Owner knowledge and values.

This next stage is located between Ivan Street in Strathmore to the Pascoe Vale Road bridge, immediately downstream from work already completed in Stage 1.
Under the plan, a meandering design and rockwork will be introduced to allow a slow flow of water that improves water quality, biodiversity and habitat.
Mayor of Moonee Valley, Councillor Dr Rose Iser, said Moonee Ponds Creek is very much loved by the community and, building on the results achieved in Stage 1, looks forward to continued improvements that support safe and sustainable engagement with the waterway.

“From a concrete drain to a beautiful creek-bed – our community is loving the transformation” Cr Iser said.

This is an iconic waterway, and we’re learning how to restore Wurundjeri people’s care so future generations can benefit.”

Melbourne Water is leading the design and delivery of the project on behalf of the Chain of Ponds Collaboration Group, and in partnership with Moonee Valley City Council as well as Merri-bek City Council, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

This second stage of the project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and Melbourne Water.
