Ahead of Anzac Day on 25 April, community members are invited to join Moonee Valley City Council in honouring the Anzacs at a commemoration ceremony on Sunday, 23 April at 3pm at the Queens Park Cenotaph in Moonee Ponds.

The ceremony, led by the Moonee Valley City Council Mayor Cr Pierce Tyson and Chief Executive Officer Helen Sui, will be held in conjunction with the Essendon RSL Sub-Branch.

Moonee Valley Mayor Cr Pierce Tyson said the many events held across the municipality, which also include services by Flemington-Kensington and Keilor East RSLs, have helped shape this significant day.

“It’s events like these that allow us to pay tribute to the significant wartime contribution by Australian service men and women, and continue to recognise the sacrifices made,” said Mayor Tyson.

“The passion brought by our community to coordinate events in memory of the Anzacs is a powerful testament to the continued importance of the Anzac legacy.”

Also taking part in the Queens Park ceremony will be other Moonee Valley councillors, local members of parliament, the Venerable Vanessa Bennett of St Thomas Anglican Church, representatives from the 58th and 32nd Battalions and 416 Squadron Australian Air Force cadets, the Moonee Valley Brass Band and local schoolchildren.

Residents are encouraged to come along to mark their respect and are invited to lay flowers or a wreath at the Cenotaph.

The ceremony will be followed by an afternoon tea in the Council chambers at the Civic Centre, where student artworks paying tribute to the Anzacs will also be on display.

The Anzac legend was born on 25 April 1915, when some 16,000 soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed under fire on the shores of Gallipoli, Türkiye. The Anzacs landing at Gallipoli helped shape the Australian story.

Their actions during the Gallipoli campaign left a powerful legacy, and we remember their courage and sacrifice each year with commemorative services.

Council has held an Anzac commemoration ceremony at the Queens Park Cenotaph since it was built in 1929.
