Squashed by Speak Percussion: a contemporary music performance

A drum adorned with two squash rackets

An empty squash court has a very particular echo. Built for a sport once among the nation’s most loved games, the walls of the Essendon courts hold the sounds of another era.

Squashed is a unique, site-specific contemporary music performance responding to the social history of the Essendon Squash Court, as part of Moonee Valley’s Art in Surprising Places program.

From Saturday 20 – Sunday 21 June, Speak Percussion will take over the courts with the first iteration of their new art labs. Join Kaylie Melville (vibraphone), Marshall McGuire (harp), Maria Moles (drum kit) and Rohan Dasika (bass) – as they serve and volley, drive and boast, flam and strike, bow and pluck; reimagining a forgotten sport into a tournament for percussion and strings.
