Moonee Valley City Council and City of Melbourne are proud to announce the release of the Racecourse Road Strategic Improvements Plan (SIP), creating a shared, long-term vision to guide the future of this essential movement corridor and activity centre.

The SIP outlines a coordinated and balanced strategy to ensure Racecourse Road remains a vibrant destination for the Flemington and Kensington communities, while addressing the increasing need for sustainable transport options amidst surrounding population growth. By prioritising safety, accessibility and liveability, the plan reflects community aspirations for an inclusive and equitable place for both residents and visitors.

Recognised as a major activity centre in Victorian planning policy, Racecourse Road serves as a vital space for local traders, residents and visitors. It also serves as a significant transport corridor accommodating people walking and cycling, trams and vehicles. The SIP includes design opportunities to:

  • expand spaces for walking and trading activities
  • improve crossing safety and accessibility
  • create safe and separate bike lanes for riders of all ages and abilities
  • enhance comfort and liveability through increased tree canopy and sustainable landscaping
  • provide safe and accessible tram stops
  • improve traffic flow and safety by managing turning movements.

Community feedback has been instrumental in shaping the plan, ensuring it reflects the diverse needs of those who live, visit and travel along Racecourse Road. Both councils are committed to advocating for the plan’s implementation in partnership with the Victorian Government. Together, we want to ensure all of Racecourse Road is as safe, welcoming and accessible as possible.
