Moonee Valley City Council is calling for a swift start to Airport Rail construction now that the long-awaited project has been given the go-ahead.

A Memorandum of Understanding signed today between Melbourne Airport, the Victorian Government and Federal Government finally gives the green light to a project first announced in 2018.

In addition to providing commuters a public transport link to Melbourne Airport, the project will also deliver for Moonee Valley residents a new station at Keilor East.

Mayor Cr Ava Adams welcomed the news, saying it was essential that construction began as soon as possible.

“Moonee Valley residents and Councillors past and present have campaigned tirelessly for this investment in our local public transport network. Today’s development comes thanks to that continued advocacy,” Cr Adams said.

“Since Airport Rail was first announced in 2018, our community has grown and so too has demand for sustainable public transport options.

“Once complete, Airport Rail will transform how our community gets around, especially residents in Airport West and Keilor East, who will have a train station closer to home than ever before.

“We thank the Airport, Victorian Government and Commonwealth for finding a way forward.

“Now, with nothing standing in their way, we look forward to seeing construction get underway promptly.”
