Become a citizen scientist and document biodiversity in Moonee Valley

Science isn’t just something done by people in lab coats using microscopes and test tubes.

Citizen science is about everyday people getting involved in data collection to better understand our environment, wildlife and ecosystems. Right now there are ways you can help expand our scientific understanding of Moonee Valley.

Council is hosting a guided Bird Exploration Walk along the Maribyrnong River from Canning Reserve on Monday, October 20, 8am – 11am.

Together with local experts, you’ll learn how to spot and record wildlife, plants and habitats while contributing information to scientific projects.

Whether it’s identifying bird calls, surveying plants, or monitoring river health, your observations will help build a stronger picture of biodiversity in our area. No prior experience is needed, just an interest in nature and a willingness to get involved.

Citizen science provides a range of benefits including:

  • the ability to gather a wide range of data across many locations
  • encourages a greater public interest in science
  • brings people together around shared interests
  • and enables faster results and scientific breakthroughs.

It’s a chance to explore the outdoors, meet others in the community, and make a positive contribution to the future health of Moonee Valley’s environment.

Keep an eye on our event page for walk dates and details on how to get involved.
