We are Certified Carbon Neutral (again!)

Climate Neutral Certification Moonee Valley City Council

We are excited to reveal that our 2020-21 Council operations have been certified as Carbon Neutral! This is the second year in a row we have achieved the certification under the Australian Government’s Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard.

The annual certification process is part of an ongoing commitment to our MV2040 Green Action Plan target of carbon neutrality for our operations. We are demonstrating leadership in climate change mitigation by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This certification is the only credible and transparent way to claim carbon neutrality in Australia.

To achieve Carbon Neutral status we:

  1. measure carbon emissions from our operations (including electricity, gas, waste, water, fleet fuel, business travel, paper);
  2. reduce these emissions where possible; and
  3. offset remaining emissions.

Carbon offset units are generated from activities that prevent, reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere. In the process of becoming carbon neutral we enhanced our operational efficiencies and reduced our costs, which ultimately benefits our community and ratepayers.

We expect our greenhouse gas emissions for 2021-22 will be 75% lower than previous years. This is because from 1 July 2021, all of our operations are powered with 100 per cent renewable electricity (as part of the Victorian Energy Collaboration (VECO) project).
