Community Recovery Committee thank you
Moonee Valley City Council has paid tribute to committee members for the dedication and courage as they guided the community recovery program following the devasting breach of the Maribyrnong River in 2022.
The volunteers were acknowledged for giving support, during their own personal grief and experiences of loss, at a small ceremony at the Ascot Vale Library on Thursday, 5 March. The event marked the close the Flood Recovery program.
It was also the launch of the photo collage, featuring images of the floodwaters captured by residents, which will remain on display until 10 April.
On 14 October 2022, the Maribyrnong River experienced one of the most significant floods in its recorded history, reaching a peak height about 4.2 metres. More than 500 residences were inundated, profoundly affecting residents on both sides of the river.
The impact extended well beyond the flood event. The clean-up, restoration and return to home process took months, with some residents facing long term displacement and considerable emotional and financial strain.
Council received from the Victorian and the Commonwealth Government to support affected residents.
