Controlled ecological management burn

Controlled ecological management burns are scheduled to take place at three (3) Council managed reserves. Please refer to the below aerial photo for the location of these reserves.
- Arcade Way Reserve, Avondale Heights
- JH Allen Reserve, East Keilor
- The Crossway South Reserve, Avondale Heights
The controlled ecological management burn is a critical part of the management of the native grasslands, it will help control weeds and stimulate the growth of wildflowers. The burn will be undertaken by licensed contractors, with experience performing these operations. Moonee Valley City Council have obtained a permit from Fire Rescue Victoria and will continue to liaise with them in the lead up to and on the day of the burn. Additional fuel breaks will be cut around the perimeter of the burn site prior to the burn.
The management burn will take place on a day with suitable weather between Monday, 28 March and Friday, 29 April. Burning will only take place when the weather permits the burn to be undertaken safely. If a suitable day is not available during this period, the burn will be postponed.
It is expected the actual burn time at each reserve will be no more than three hours. During this time, residents are encouraged to bring in their laundry, close house windows and turn off air conditioners. Properties that share a boundary with these reserves will be doorknocked on the morning of the burn.
If you would like to register for an SMS notification on the morning of the burn, please provide your name and mobile number to Customer Service on 9243 8888 or council@mvcc.vic.gov.au.
The native grasslands involved in these controlled ecologies are critically endangered and protected by both state and federal law.
Less than 0.5% of the original grasslands remain making the patches in our backyard extremely rare and precious.
