Council business summary September to November 2022

Your elected Councillors meet twice a month to debate Council business, set strategic objectives and make decisions on behalf of the community. Here are some of the decisions made and discussions held over the past few months:

 

27 September 2022

Council’s 27 September meeting focused on open space activation and working through challenges with improving access to amenities.

  • The amended Draft Moonee Valley Soccer Strategy 2022-23 was endorsed to look at ways to increase the availability of soccer facilities.
  • Findings from the report on under utilised open space in Rose Hill Ward, to be incorporated into future planning to achieve Council’s MV2040 strategic objectives.
  • Council discussed potential pocket park opportunities in Aberfeldie and Essendon.

 

11 October 2022

An important recognition of a local resident’s contribution was unanimously endorsed in Council’s meeting on 11 October. Parking and signage were also discussed.

  • The late Ms Nancy Taylor will be honoured with a memorial plaque at the Queens Park Swimming Pool.
  • Traffic and parking management in the Strathnaver Reserve precinct to be improved with installation of additional signage.

 

25 October 2022

Health and social inclusion were a focus in Council’s 25 October meeting with youth-led advocacy, accessible walking and cycling infrastructure and disability on the agenda.

  • Discussion of how all Council Plan and Health Plan Strategies will support the mental health needs of our youth and the broader community which includes active transport and physical activity.
  • Council endorsed the submission of the Disability Inclusion Bill Exposure Draft which provides engagement for those with lived experience of disability to advise the work of local government as paid consultants.

 

27 October 2022 (Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor)

It was a big evening with Cr Pierce Tyson elected as Mayor and Cr Samantha Byrne elected Deputy Mayor. All Councillors were assigned to committees and portfolios in specific areas of focus for 2023.

 

15 November 2022

In the first meeting since Mayor Tyson’s election, it was straight to work with discussion about how to improve the environment and keeping local streets safe with speed limits.

  • Recruitment for a Community Carbon Emissions Reduction Taskforce to begin by 31 December 2022.
  • The permanent 40km/h speed limit along Keilor Road between Woorite Place and Spring Street to be maintained.
