Essendon Interim Kindergarten Building Installed

Essendon Kindergarten interim site construction

The Essendon interim Kindergarten facility is in place! The two-room modular building was installed on Thursday 27 October 2022 on the Essendon Keilor College site in McCracken Street, Essendon. Remaining onsite works will take place over the next eight weeks and final landscaping will continue over the summer.

The interim kindergarten caters to the needs of local families, providing services for 2023 while a permanent kindergarten facility is redeveloped across the road at 2-4 McCracken Street. In addition to the two kindergarten rooms, the interim facility will also be home to a Maternal and Child Health room, a dedicated outdoor learning space and play areas for use by the kindergarten.

Modular buildings were chosen as an efficient solution to deliver quality facilities in a short time frame with minimal disruptions to the school and community. This gives children faster access to high quality learning environments.

Open for Term one 2023

Ben McManus, Acting Service Delivery Director is pleased to report that the project is on track and the kindergarten service will be open for children for Term one 2023. Kindergarten services will be offered five days a week during terms.

“We are especially excited to be able to share this update with the families who have enrolled at the centre and our communications with this group will increase over coming weeks in preparation for the 2023 kindergarten year,” said Ben.

Accessing the kindergarten

The kindergarten will have its own entrance, separate from Keilor College and will be maintained and operate as an entirely separate service as per the National Children’s Services Education and Care Regulations. Fencing and landscaping will provide privacy for the children so they can play outdoors in their own play area.

The carpark is at 29 Thomson St (Corner of Thomson and McCracken Streets), with entry from Thomson and exit via McCracken.

Kindergartens built using modular construction are an efficient solution for delivering quality buildings in short timeframes.

They are constructed in a factory in sections known as “modules”. These modules are delivered to the kindergarten site, where builders assemble them, connect utilities and complete outdoor areas.

Constructing the modules offsite minimises disruptions to the school and community. The process also reduces the time required for a traditional build and gives children faster access to high-quality learning environments.
