Five simple steps to make your Monday walk to school a breeze

Moonee Valley is excited to launch ‘Move on Mondays’, encouraging our youngest residents and their families to kick off every new week by walking, cycling or scooting to school.
Active travel to and from school benefits the whole community by reducing congestion, encouraging healthy habits and helping children connect with friends and family. Just ask the hundreds of families who this year took part in Move in March, Moonee Valley’s annual push to encourage active travel to and from school. Now imagine the benefits of keeping up that habit, once a week, all year round. That’s what Move on Monday’s is all about!
We have compiled some simple steps you and your family can follow to make a weekly walk even easier.
- Practice makes perfect. Make sure you have mapped out your route and know the way before you embark on your journey. Feeling familiar with their journey will grow confidence, to find the best active paths in your area, use our map to see the best places to walk.
- Don’t go it alone. Get a walking buddy or create an informal walking school bus – find out which of your friends live along the way to school and encourage each other to get active in the morning!
- All aboard! Join the school walking school bus and meet some new friends to walk to school with. You can find and join your school’s Walking School Bus on our website.
- Every bit counts. If walking to and from school doesn’t work for you, try getting dropped off in the morning and walking home in the afternoon, or vice versa.
- Set up for success. Prepare your uniform before you go to sleep. Make sure your outfit is easy to put on as soon as you get up in the morning!
