Creativity to ignite city’s culturally-led prosperity.

More live music, a booming night-time economy and making Moonee Valley a preferred place for artists to work and live are just some of the key ambitions of Moonee Valley Council’s visionary four-year arts and culture masterplan.

Igniting Creativity in Moonee Valley 23-27 was adopted unanimously at last Tuesday night’s meeting of Council.

The four-year strategy is the result of community consultation that began over a year ago, when Council first sought feedback from members of the Moonee Valley community on what they wanted to see in arts and culture in the municipality.

The inner-Melbourne local government area of Moonee Valley comprises 15 suburbs including Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Keilor East, Strathmore and Flemington.

Within its first two years, the wide-ranging Arts and Culture Strategy includes:

  • a ‘one-stop shop’ website for arts and culture opportunities across Moonee Valley
  • spotlighting local artists and cultural assets, making Moonee Valley a preferred place for artists to choose to work and live
  • a forum for local businesses and artists to explore opportunities for collaboration
  • developing a festivals and events framework to support business and encourage commercial activity
  • encouraging live music and the night-time economy to drive culturally-led prosperity.

Longer-term strategy aims include:

  • implementing the Maribyrnong River Cultural Precinct Master Plan
  • a Creative Arts Workshop space for artists of all generations, cultures and creative practices
  • advocating for the transformation of Council’s flagship visual arts venue, Incinerator Gallery, into an accredited public art gallery.

Moonee Valley City Council Mayor, Cr Pierce Tyson, said the holistic strategy aspired to embed arts and culture into everyday life in the municipality, offering everyone the chance to not just enjoy the city’s cultural offerings, but to help build and grow them.

“Whether you’re an artist, local business, or just a lover of the arts, I encourage everyone to keep an eye on our social media and website in the coming weeks and months,” Mayor Tyson said.

“There will be many opportunities for people of all ages, from all walks of life, to get involved as we begin to roll out the many components of the strategy.

“Let’s ignite creativity across Moonee Valley together.”
