Sam Petersen wins 2024 Incinerator Art Award

Sam Petersen (pictured, right) was named as the winner of the prestigious $10,000 Incinerator Art Award at Incinerator Gallery on Friday night.

Petersen’s work, You Need Us (2023) (pictured in background) was selected from a pool of 266 entries received from emerging and established artists across Australia. In response to the theme ‘Art for Social Change’, these artists presented powerful works that explore critical issues shaping our world today including Indigenous knowledge, queer histories, the climate crisis, class, diversity, inclusion, gender and identity.

The esteemed jury panel declared Petersen’s You Need Us, 2023, as the standout among the 27 shortlisted artworks. Now in its tenth year, this exhibition stands at the pinnacle of artistic programming, fostering positive social awareness within the local community and across Australia.

Also announced was the $1,000 City of Moonee Valley Mayoral Award winner. Chiara Zeta was selected for her work Un/believable 2 (2024), who met the thematic brief through highlighting the slogans of generations of women’s rights and in the communication of ideas from the feminist movement from the past and present.

The $1,000 People’s Choice Award is open for judging by gallery visitors up until 24th November 2024.

Since 2014, the Incinerator Art Award has helped identify and create a platform for over 3000 of Australia’s pre-eminent emerging and established artists addressing societal challenges and opportunities for social good. Each year, the artists are carefully selected and given the opportunity to participate in a program considered the foremost in the emergent art scene. The Award program is a critical component of the Gallery’s mission to spearhead Australia’s creative industry in the northwestern suburbs of Melbourne/Naarm.
