Youth for schools

Engaging with local high schools is a vital part of our work - from lunch time activities to workshops and assemblies.

High school engagement

Engaging with local high schools is a vital part of our work. Valley Youth is available to attend high schools during lunchtimes, assemblies and classroom time.

We have an established suite of free lunch time and classroom pop-up activities.

These activities will be run by qualified youth workers who have experience working in school settings and with young people with different needs.

Our youth workers have Working with Children Checks, follow the latest Child Safety Standards and confidently put their skills and knowledge into practice.

These activities have been designed to support students to develop their skills, be involved in their community, access activities that promote positive health and wellbeing outcomes. They are also a great way to recognise and celebrates dates of recognition at your school! They include:

Grade 6 Transition Well program

Are your students feeling nervous about starting high school? Don’t worry, we’ve got their back!

Valley Youth run a free program for Grade 6 students in Moonee Valley called Transition Well, aimed at supporting students transition into Year 7.

During a 1 hour in-person session at your school we have conversations with your students about:

  • their feelings about going into high school
  • what mental health is
  • things to do to maintain positive mental health and wellbeing during the transition
  • activities to identify friends, adults and professionals they can turn to during times of change or stress
  • a Q&A about what it’s like to be in high school covering topics including homework, friendships, bullying and more.

Here’s what students said about the sessions:

  • “The most important thing I learned today was how to maintain good mental health”
  • “There’s always a person who can help you if you need it” and “never be afraid to talk to someone”
  • “High school is not as nerve-racking as I thought”

This program has been running since 2019! The sessions are facilitated by Valley Youth’s qualified youth workers. Our youth workers have Working with Children Checks, follow the latest Child Safety Standards and confidently put their skills and knowledge into practice.

All primary schools in Moonee Valley will be contacted and invited to participate in the program in Term 4 in 2024.

If you have questions about the Grade 6 Transition Well program we’d be happy to answer them! Get in touch with us at youth@mvcc.vic.gov.au or call 9243 1225.
