MEDIA RELEASE: A vision for arts and culture in Moonee Valley

An ambitious four-year draft arts and culture strategy has been endorsed by Moonee Valley City Council for public consultation.
Unlocking the Wealth of our Creativity: City of Moonee Valley Draft Arts & Culture Strategy 2023-2027 was approved for public consultation at Tuesday night’s meeting of Council.
The four-year strategy is the result of community consultation that began a year ago, when Council first sought feedback from the Moonee Valley community and our artists on what they wanted to see in arts and culture offerings in the municipality.
The draft strategy includes plans for:
- advocating for and spotlighting our local artists and cultural assets, and in doing so making Moonee Valley a preferred place for artists to choose to live
- developing a festivals and events framework that considers timing and locations to support business and encourages commercial activity
- a Creative Arts Workshop space for artists of all generations, cultures and creative practices
- encouraging live music and the Night-Time Economy to drive culturally-led prosperity
- implementing the Maribyrnong River Cultural Precinct Master Plan
- advocating for the transformation of the Incinerator Gallery into an accredited public art gallery.
Moonee Valley City Council Mayor, Cr Pierce Tyson, said the draft strategy aspired to make arts and culture in the municipality a ‘must have’ rather than an ‘add-on’.
“Culture, creativity and artistic expression showcase who we are, what sets us apart and who we aspire to be as a community,” he said.
Cr Tyson said with the shift in “social dials and priorities” over the past three years, “many now have a greater appreciation of the role of arts and culture in our society.”
“Council believes that the success of arts, culture and the broader creative industries will support out vibrant community and the City’s growth and future success,” he said.
