MEDIA RELEASE: New art program to support people with dementia

Moonee Valley City Council is thrilled to introduce an innovative new art program that aims to support people in the early stages of dementia, Art Mondo.

Modelled after successful museum and gallery programs across Australia and globally, Art Mondo is set to revolutionise support for those living with dementia, and the people who care for them.

Held at Incinerator Gallery in Aberfeldie, Art Mondo is a unique blend of interactive discussions, social engagement, and hands-on creative activities, carefully crafted to provide a nurturing and responsive environment.

Participants can expect to see tangible benefits such as improved cognitive function, reduced stress levels, and enhanced emotional wellbeing.

Developed and facilitated by the esteemed Barking Spider Creative team, the program not only fosters individual growth, but also cultivates vital social connections and a profound sense of belonging.

Moonee Valley City Council Mayor, Cr Pierce Tyson, said programs like Art Mondo supported the inclusive aims of the Council’s arts and culture strategy, Igniting Creativity in Moonee Valley, 23-27.

“Moonee Valley is proud to offer innovative and inclusive programs such as Art Mondo. We want to ensure people of all ages and all abilities have every opportunity to enjoy and take part in local arts and culture,” Mayor Tyson said.

“The benefits of art practice empowers and enriches people living with dementia, while encouraging them to forge meaningful connections within their community.”
