Montague Street Boardwalk Upgrade

The Montague Street Boardwalk forms part of the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and is situated adjacent to Montague Street, Moonee Ponds. Upgrading the boardwalk is identified in Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy and aligns with various objectives in MV2040 to improve the safety and connectivity of the shared path network.
The existing 80m timber boardwalk has a number of safety issues and will need to be replaced in the near future. Accordingly, Council is in the process of developing a design to replace the boardwalk with a widened, cantilevered structure over the Moonee Ponds Creek. The new boardwalk maintains the existing alignment on the residential side of the boardwalk and a plan is enclosed for your information.
The new boardwalk is proposed to be a 3.0m wide steel structure (with additional width for clearances). The surface of the boardwalk will be a non-slip material and the corresponding shared path entrances will be upgraded to concrete. This will significantly improve safety for all shared path users.
Please be advised that as part of the design process, Council recently conducted an inspection of the boardwalk and will be restricting access to pedestrians and cyclists only until it is replaced with a new boardwalk. Relevant signs advising of these changes will be installed as soon as possible.
The anticipated timeframe for delivery of the new Montague Street Boardwalk is by June 2024 subject to external stakeholder approval.
