Moonee Valley calls for free transport for Show punters

Moonee Valley City Council is calling on the Victorian State Government to expand the public transport free travel zone for the remainder of this year’s Melbourne Royal Show, and offer free public transport for ticket holders to the Show in future years to ease traffic congestion and access issues.
Moonee Valley Mayor Cr Samantha Byrne said this year’s high-attendance has put significant pressure on the operation of the surrounding arterial and local road network, including local residential access and parking availability, and is calling on the state government to introduce urgent measures to address the issue.
“Following two years of cancellations, this year’s Melbourne Royal Show is bigger than ever and has already experienced record attendance, with 50,000 attending the opening day making it the first ever sell-out day one.
“It’s so wonderful to once again be celebrating these important events for Melbourne and to come together as a community.
“To ensure everyone has the absolute best experience, we all need to work together to improve the accessibility and help our community get to and from these major venues safely and easily, so we’re calling on the Victorian State Government to urgently extend the free tram zone for the duration of the Show and increase the frequency of trams, trains and buses.” said Mayor Byrne.
Congestion is expected to worsen when the Melbourne Royal Show conflicts with Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday, 1 October 2022.
“We’re also asking the state government to offer free public transport for ticket holders to the Show in the future years to encourage public transport usage, which is in line with Council’s long-term strategy, MV2040 to improve access to active and sustainable transport options in Moonee Valley,” said Mayor Byrne.
