Council backs Indigenous Voice to Parliament

Moonee Valley City Council has unanimously resolved to support the introduction of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.
Moonee Valley City Council Mayor Pierce Tyson said he believed Moonee Valley City Council is among the first Victorian municipalities to publicly and formally declare their support for the ‘Voice’ which will give constitutional recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
At the Council Meeting on Tuesday, 31 January, Councillors voted in favour of Cr Katrina Hodgson’s Notice of Motion to formally support the proposal when the referendum is held.
Mayor Tyson said the Council resolution was a significant and symbolic step towards Reconciliation and called on other municipalities to declare their support for the Voice To Parliament.
“We are committed to actively engaging with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders on how Council can support their aspirations for the Voice to Parliament, and how to best facilitate community conversations and build awareness in with our community about the upcoming referendum.
Our local community has made absolutely clear they want Moonee Valley to be leading the way in support of our traditional owners.
As a Council, we are committed to Reconciliation and we acknowledge that we are on a journey of learning and continuing to work actively in partnership with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders,” Mayor Tyson said.
