Moonee Valley community support for flood clean-up

Flood recovery has brought out the best in the Moonee Valley community. Giving their time and effort to help clean and restore our public open spaces impacted by the flood, the outpouring of support and volunteering from residents, staff, and community groups has been incredible.
We had 53 participants who assisted with the community flood clean-up on 13th November. Over 2,500 litres of small pieces of litter were collected across the site, which is a fantastic achievement for a few hours of effort. Many bits of litter stuck in the cyclone wire fence at the footbridge near the Riverside Golf Course and across Fairbairn Park were meticulously removed.
Lucky finds for local heroes
The day’s more interesting finds included a complete working mountain bike and $15 cash found by one lucky child. Thanks to the CSIRO for inventing washable bank notes!
A big shout out to all who attended from the local community, including the Essendon Sea Scouts, Friends of Steele Creek, Moonee Valley Sustainability, the Friends of Maribyrnong Valley, Moonee Valley Sustainability, the Red and Black Runners Group and Melbourne University’s Women’s Football Team. We also had Mayor Pierce Tyson, Deputy Mayor Samantha Byrne, Cr Rose Iser and Cr Katrina Hodgson picking up litter, along with our CEO Helen Sui and a team of staff to orchestrate the clean-up.
So mulch to do in Riverside!
We were also able to mulch and replant five garden beds around Riverside while picking up litter from the flood waters. Even the Little Library, originally hand-crafted for the community by the Strathmore Men’s Shed, got some love. Once again, it’s been filled with stories kindly donated by Moonee Valley Libraries.
