MEDIA RELEASE: Moonee Valley welcomes new councillors

Newly elected Moonee Valley Councillors were sworn in for a four-year term during a ceremony on Tuesday, 19 November 2024.

A full chamber of family, friends and community members witnessed the nine councillors take their oath or affirmation of office in front of Moonee Valley City Council’s CEO Helen Sui and sign their declaration.

Wurundjeri Elder, Uncle Bill, also opened the meeting with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony.

The new Councillor group includes:

  • Airport Ward – Cr Hamish Jones
  • Buckley Ward – Cr John Barnes
  • Canning Ward – Cr Paula Theocharides
  • Fairbairn Ward – Cr Phil Burn
  • Milleara Ward – Cr John Sipek
  • Myrnong Ward – Cr Rose Iser
  • Queens Park Ward – Cr Ava Adams
  • Steele Creek Ward – Cr Samantha Byrne
  • Woodlands Ward – Cr Fran Cosgriff

CEO Helen Sui welcomed and congratulated the newly elected Council group.

“On behalf of the community and Council staff I congratulate you all on your election,” Helen Sui said.

“We look forward to working with you over the next four years as we continue to deliver quality services and good governance for the Moonee Valley community.”

The new Councillor group will elect a Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the 2024-25 term on Tuesday, 26 November. The public is welcome to attend in-person or view the livestream via the Moonee Valley website.
