Monte Carlo Reserve lies at the junction between the ancient basalt Keilor Plains and the deeply eroded Maribyrnong River basin. The landscape is characterized by steep gullies and embankments leading down to the river (refer Fig 01). The original landscape contained a number of ephemeral water courses that drained the surrounding plateau, creating the still identifiable gully that passes through the site.
