General Election - October 2024

A general election of councillors for Moonee Valley City Council was held on Saturday, 26 October 2024. The election was held by postal ballot and was conducted on behalf of Council by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC). Voting at the election was compulsory for residents of Moonee Valley who are enrolled on the Victorian electoral roll.

The election period also known as ‘caretaker’, begins on the last day that nominations can be received being Tuesday, 17 September 2024 at 12 noon and ends at 6pm on Election Day, Saturday, 26 October 2024. Our Election Period Policy ensures that Council business continues throughout this period in a responsible and transparent manner.

The VEC mailed out ballot packs to all enrolled voters from Monday 7 October 2024. Completed ballot papers must have been posted or dropped off at the VEC’s Moonee Valley Election Office (in the envelope provided with the ballot papers) before 6 pm on Friday, 25 October 2024.

In Victoria, if you are enrolled to vote, you must vote in all Federal, State and council elections. If you do not vote, you may get a fine. The non-voter enforcement program will be managed by the VEC. If you have receive an ‘Apparent Failure to Vote Notice’ the information on the VEC website will help you understand what you need to do if you get this notice.

Candidate training

Under the Local Government Act 2020, all candidates for election must attend a candidate training session prior to nominating. If you do not attend a training session, you will not be eligible to nominate.

MAV Citizen to Councillor Guide 2024

Each candidate in a local government general election is required to submit an election campaign donation return to the Chief Executive Officer of the Council within 40 days of election day. A summary of an election campaign donation return must be made available on Council's website until the close of the voters' roll for the next general election.
