What you need to know

Place naming and public memorial

Did you know that Council is the responsible authority for naming of community assets?

This includes roads, parks, localities and other places. It also includes recognising special people from our community through the naming of memorials, plaques and trees.

Council recognises that some community members wish to acknowledge the life of a deceased person or association or event by establishing a memorial in public open space on Council owned or managed property.

Our Public Memorial Policy provides a framework for public memorials within Moonee Valley. Visit Public Policies and search for Public Memorial Policy.

Consultation with members of the public is also an important part of the process of naming and renaming roads, features and localities. The naming process is supported by our Place Naming Policy. Visit Public Policies and search for Place Naming Policy.

Complete the Public Memorials Application Form (PDF, 228KB) and send it to placenaming@mvcc.vic.gov.au to submit your application.

This process is also governed by the State Government Naming Rules of Places in Victoria. On this page, you can find resources that may be useful for understanding the naming process.

If you have any queries about place naming or the public memorial process, or wish to submit an application you can contact our Governance team on 9243 8888 or email placenaming@mvcc.vic.gov.au
