New councillor for Moonee Valley after countback

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) today declared Jessica O’Neil as Councillor-elect for the City of Moonee Valley’s Buckley Ward, following a vote countback on Monday 29 April to fill a vacancy.
The VEC held a countback of all formal votes from the last Moonee Valley Council election, held in 2020, with O’Neil emerging as the successful candidate.
City of Moonee Valley Mayor, Cr Pierce Tyson, said he looked forward to working with Councillor-elect O’Neil.
“As a local healthcare worker who co-founded her own successful business, I’m sure Cr O’Neil will bring a wealth of invaluable experience,” Mayor Tyson said.
“On behalf of myself, Councillors and our community, I’d like to congratulate Jess and look forward to working with her.”
Mayor Tyson said he was also proud that, with Councillor-elect O’Neil’s appointment, Moonee Valley Council would become the equal-third leader in Victorian local government for female representation, with six of its nine councillors women.
City of Moonee Valley Chief Executive Officer, Helen Sui, said she welcomed the declaration of the incoming councillor.
“I’m so pleased that Councillor-elect O’Neil holds a passion to serve our wonderful municipality,” Ms Sui said. “I and Council staff look forward to supporting her as the newest Councillor for Moonee Valley.”
Councillor-elect O’Neil is expected to be formally sworn in to Moonee Valley City Council on Monday, 6 May.
