New station announced for Keilor East!

New station announced in Keilor East

Moonee Valley City has today applauded the Victorian Government’s announcement that Melbourne’s new airport rail line will include a brand-new station in Keilor East.

The State Government today announced the station would be set to open in 2029.

Moonee Valley City Mayor Samantha Byrne said today’s announcement was the result of extensive advocacy by Council and the community and she thanked the State and Federal Governments for the commitment as part of the Airport Rail project.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a railway station in the north west – in an area that would benefit enormously from a public transport boost.

“It is a day to celebrate for Moonee Valley residents.  Some community members who live in the Keilor East/Airport West area can take more than an hour to reach Melbourne’s CBD via the tram and bus services, yet it is only located 13 km away.

“A train station will turn that commute into just minutes and will also enable more local residents to use public transport instead of driving,” Mayor Byrne said.

Airport workers would also benefit from the opportunity to catch the train to work.  Suburbs around Airport West and Keilor East provide a large part of the workforce that services Melbourne airport and its surrounding industries.

“The station will help build on our community’s reputation as a key aviation, technology and employment precinct and wipe out the transport black hole we have endured for decades,” Mayor Byrne said.

Mayor Byrne thanked Minister Carroll and Minister Shorten for the work they have been doing behind the scenes to support this project and ensured Moonee Valley would work closely with the State and Federal Government to ensure a smooth delivery of the project.
