Artist in Residence

The Woodlands Park Garage Studio

Moonee Valley City Council is making the Woodlands Park Garage Studio available to artists interested in a residency and invites early career or established artists to consider an application for Artist in Residence in 2025.

This opportunity is for residencies of 8-12 weeks, though longer or shorter residency periods will be considered. The space would be suitable for a variety of artist mediums, including painters, sculptures, potters, writers, illustrators, designers, composers, puppet-makers and more.

A stipend of $3000 will be provided to assist the artist in the development of their chosen work.

This initiative is part of the Arts & Culture Strategy, Igniting Creativity in Moonee Valley 23-27.

Application requirements

The Artist in Residence recipient will be:

  • a Moonee Valley resident, or have connections to the local community where they might live, work or play
  • any suitable arts, craft and design practitioner with an interest in Indigenous practice, public space, heritage architecture and social history at any stage of their career.

Assessment criteria

Council will assess each application based on:

  • artistic merit (including originality of concept and exhibition history)
  • timeliness of residency proposal (i.e. impact on career, body of work and/or artist)
  • alignment with Igniting Creativity in Moonee Valley 23-27 Arts and Culture Strategy
  • viability of proposed development/research/collaboration
  • relevance of presentation possibilities to the community and/or artform.
  • In addition, early career artists will require the confidence to work independently.

More information

There is flat, paved pathway access to the studio, and an accessible toilet. The artist will have flexibility to bring in their preferred materials and work benches if desired. Please contact us if you have any questions about access ignitingcreativity@mvcc.vic.gov.au

Public Liability
Each successful artist must have public liability insurance. If a successful artist does not have public liability insurance already, it is available through a conversation with Council.

Personal Property/Equipment Cover
While this type of insurance is not mandatory, MVCC cannot be held accountable to any loss or damage of materials while on site.

There is all day public parking available just off Winifred Street, plus additional spaces at the nearby shopping centre. Otherwise, the Studio is located close to Glenbervie Station, and the 59 tram line.

Artists will nominate their chosen work hours with council and will be able to access the building at any time during that window. This will include evening and weekend access, subject to prior agreement. Due to insurance purposes, however, the Studio cannot be accessed 24 hours a day.

The initial residency will run from Tuesday 22 April, for a duration of 8 to 12 weeks, but we hope to offer this program on a rolling basis.

The artist can come and go during their nominated work hours, accessing the Studio via a fob. There will be no need to request access at each visit.

There is currently no climate control within the studio, though artists are welcome to bring portable heating and cooling into the space.

There is a small “kitchenette”, with cupboards, bench space and taps. Artists are welcome to eat and drink in the studio.
