Protect your health with Council immunisation sessions

Council encourages the community to stay protected this winter by booking into a Council‑run immunisation session. Several important vaccines are available to help protect individuals, families and the wider community from serious illness.

Annual influenza (flu) vaccination

Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over, from April onwards, before the peak flu season between June and September.

The flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent influenza and reduce the risk of serious illness and complications. Babies and young children are especially vulnerable, and vaccination is an important part of their routine childhood immunisations.

The influenza vaccine is free for people in the following priority groups:

• children aged 6 months to under 5 years
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
• pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
• people aged 65 years and over
• people aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions that increase the risk of severe influenza and complications.

Important information for parents:

Children under 9 years receiving the flu vaccine for the first time will need 2 doses, at least 4 weeks apart. All other age groups only require one dose.

RSV vaccine now available

The Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccine has recently been added to the National Immunisation Program. RSV is a common and highly contagious virus that affects the airways and lungs and can be serious for some people.

From 15 May 2026, the RSV vaccine will be available at all Council immunisation sessions and will be free for eligible priority groups.

Measles protection is important

With measles cases continuing to rise across Melbourne, Council is working in partnership with Western Health Public Health Unit and the Department of Health to encourage everyone to check they are up to date with their MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide long‑lasting protection against measles.

Council’s immunisation service is delivered by specialist immunisation nurses, offering families a convenient and accessible way to stay up to date with vaccinations.
