Reduce carbon emissions, lower energy bills
Local businesses are encouraged to adopt more sustainable practices under our ‘Let’s Go Zero’ community carbon emission reduction program.
Moonee Valley City Council has a target of net zero community emissions by 2040 – and that means everyone can be a part of the commitment to reduce carbon emissions.
Mayor of Moonee Valley, Dr Rose Iser, joined the chorus of inviting residents, workers and businesses to work together to meet the projected emissions target.
“Under our Sustainable Business program, we have offered support for businesses to get solar and energy audits and discovered loads of actions happening across the municipality that reduce waste and conserve energy,” Mayor Dr Iser said.
“We are genuinely heartened by local business who are taking actions like repurposing office furniture or designing layouts to take advantage of natural light.
“We are now collecting case studies to capture and share key learnings from our business community that others could reproduce.”
A medical specialist practice in Aberfeldie is one local business that offered examples of how to reduce their carbon footprint, and their business expenses. Their actions ranged from going electric to reducing reliance on artificial lighting, which also creates a better environment for clinicians and patients.
Their green commitment now goes beyond structures and is part of the office culture. Going paperless and offering tap water and glasses in reception instead of disposable cups are other suggestions. Finally, the business installed raised veggie pods where the staff grow herbs and vegetables.
“There are many ways for local businesses to reduce their environmental impacts, go green is not just for households.”
“These practices are positive for our environment and will also lower expenses, a great opportunity for our local business community.” Mayor Dr Iser concluded.
